Colorado in November is all about gearing up for Opening Day of the ski and snowboard season. To celebrate this unique Rocky Mountain holiday, Breckenridge Brewery of Colorado and Never Summer Industries have been busy planning a joint project that combines the best of the two companies’ crafts. While Never Summer Industries created an inaugural “Artist Series” snowboard, Breckenridge Brewery concocted a limited release, draft-only beer to launch the 2013 winter recreation season. The board and beer will be incorporated into Opening Day celebrations throughout the United States. The two Colorado companies are well known around the country for their respective crafts. Breckenridge Brewery’s beers are sold in 37 states, and Never Summer snowboards and longboards can be found worldwide.

Denver Beer Week Suds Extravaganza

Another Great American Beer Festival is eminent, and Colorado breweries and tap houses are accumulating kegs to offer a plethora of brews from around the nation. Parties, after-hours, tappings, tours, and recovery breakfasts abound.
So, if you didn't score tickets to the fest, worry not, there will be plenty to beer to be had.
We've gathered a list of some of these shindigs on our events page. Make certain to check back often for recent additions. And, don't forget to look to your local bar and taphouse. You never know when a aged sour is going to awaken from a long sleep in a dark cellar and find it's way to a table of unsuspecting beer aficionados!

Denver is about to host yet another beer-related festival this August. The Fermentation Festival and Market will showcase to wild-eyed visitors a vast assortment of fermented foods and beverages.

Festival attendees will have the opportunity to sample a plethora of fermented offerings and rub shoulders with Colorado’s leading fermented food and beverage experts. "We want guests to come away from the festival with a unique new outlook on fermentation. Fermentation is a simple process that creates some of the most interesting flavors imaginable. In addition to incredible flavor, fermentation also supports a variety of health benefits from improved digestion to increased mood," says festival organizer Mike Burns. "Many cultures consider fermented foods as the key to longevity."
Participants include TRVE Brewing, Grand Teton Brewing, Ling Elixirs, Vital Cultured Foods, Dae Gee Korean BBQ, Vibrant Veggies, Happy Leaf Kombucha, Vodka 14, Papagayo Rum, Juniper Green Gin, Highland Harvest Scotch, UK5 Vodka and more to be added.
There is almost no limit to what can be fermented. At this festival alone the fermentation lists includes: cabbage, barley, ginger, beets, honey, tea, potatoes, sugar, carrots and kale to name a few.

AHA Rally At Left Hand

In Utah - No Standing And Drinking!!!

As we celebrate Colorado Craft Beer Week this week, and all things wonderful surrounding craft beer, here's a bit of perspective for you.
According to Utah Beer's blog Utah state senator John Valentine, pictured here, the head of the powerful Business and Labor Committee & the author of most of Utah's liquor legislation, has a new piece of legislation that he's inserted into SB261. This new proposed law states that, any person in a restaurant cannot stand while drinking an alcoholic beverage. You must be seated!
Really??? Really Senator Valentine???
The blog goes on to say that "I don't have to tell you that this guy holds enough influence to make this crap reality. Please, please, please contact your Representative & Senator and shut this thing down!"
Wow. No wonder Epic Brewing Company, the Salt Lake City based brewery, is opening a brewery in Denver this year. And something tells me that our governor would veto a piece of legislation like that. So, Coloradans, celebrate our wonderful craft brewing tradition, and just for our neighbors in Utah, drink one standing up!
Remember, as the saying goes, "Eat, Drink, and Be Merry, for Tomorrow You May Be In Utah!
Colorado Craft Beer Show Coming Soon

A new show about craft beer in Colorado is coming to a TV near you. On April 6th, at 9:30pm, Colorado Brews will premiere on Rocky Mountain PBS.
Here's an extended preview of the pilot. The first show will feature Crabtree Brewing Company in Greeley.
Sounds like a killer opportunity to find a soft spot on the couch, imbibe a bottle of suds or two, and watch what's happening in the ever-expanding world of Colorado craft beer!

"Colorado Brews" is a new half hour television program devoted to showcasing Colorado's craft breweries. Each episode will feature one of the state’s outstanding breweries and highlight the signature beers it produces and the passionate brewmasters who create them.
The show is the vision of creator and executive producer Charles Nuckolls and includes a cast of Colorado beer enthusiasts. "Colorado Brews" host, Ed Sealover, is a reporter for the Denver Business Journal and author of Mountain Brew: A Guide to Colorado’s Breweries. His supporting cast includes Executive Chef David Davis of The Golden Hotel, who does a food and beer pairing segment; beer blogger Billy Broas, who does a home brewing segment; beer blogger Leah Arthur, who reports in each episode from one of Colorado’s beer events or festivals; and beer blogger Dave Butler, who hosts a beer tech segment that focuses on a technical aspect of beer.
Colorado Craft Beer Week

For the first time since its inception 2 years ago, Colorado Craft Beer Week will be run by the Colorado Brewer's Guild. The Colorado Brewer's Guild (CBG), a non-profit group dedicated to promoting Colorado craft brewers, has taken over responsibility for organizing, and growing, the celebration. "The CBG and our member brewers saw great opportunity to produce a world-class beer week for beer lovers all over Colorado," said Steve Kurowski, Marketing and Public Affairs Director for the CBG.
Colorado Craft Beer Week runs March 18-24. The kick-off event will be held at the Falling Rock Tap House Monday March 18th, 7-10 pm, offering more than 80 different Colorado brewery beers on tap-something no other tap room has done before.

Huge Colorado Craft Lineup At Alamo Drafthouse

The soon-to-open Alamo Drafthouse in Littleton promises to provide a unique movie-going experience. Not only are they combining food and drink service in a 7 theatre venue, the stand alone bar Glass Half-Fullhas a tap wall that draws exclusively from local and regional Colorado breweries, with an emphasis on the world-class beer produced in and around Denver.
The Glass Half Full tap wall will feature an extensive lineup of 32 craft beers from 20 Colorado brewers, including 4 "Badass" taps that will rotate a range of beers, from barrel-aged sours to rare seasonals to pilot batches and small, upstart brewers debuting their product in the Denver market.
Patrons can order beers from the tap wall inside Glass Half Full or from their seat inside the theater to enjoy while watching a film. The full tap wall lineup is below.

Craft Beer Bill Gets Killed At The Start

Colorado State House Bill 1178, which would have expanded full-strength beer sales to convenience and grocery stores was killed by its maker, Republican representative Kevin Priola of Henderson, on Tuesday. Priola’s bill would have allowed grocery and convenience stores to sell full-strength beer made by any brewery that produces less than 6 million barrels per year.
This would have effectively limited sales to craft beer, since the big macro breweries, Coors, Miller, and Bud, make too much beer to fall into this category.
As reported byEd Sealover of the Denver Business Journal, Priola decided to kill the bill before any testimony could be taken. He had already been told by fellow members of the House Business, Labor, Economic and Workforce Development Committee that they were not interested in passing House Bill 1178.
Both liquor store owners and craft brewers celebrated when the bill went down. There will not likely be other legislation presented that addresses this topic this year.
Craft Beer In Grocer/Convenience Stores...Again?

It appears that the annual debate over whether convenience and grocery stores in Colorado should be able to sell full-strength beer is preparing to rear it's beery head again. As reported by Jonathan Shikes in Westword News last week, a new bill will soon be presented to the Colorado State Legislature that would do just that.
Kevin Priola, republican from Henderson, is putting together a proposal that he believes will satisfy both sides of this issue. On one side are craft breweries and liquor store owners who believe that opening up sales of full-strength beer to convenience stores and grocery stores will hurt their business. The other side is the grocery store/convenience store lobby. The Beer Drinker’s Guide To Colorado has chronicled this debate for years. Read more about this issue here . Priola's idea is to allow grocery and convenience stores to sell full-strength beer made by any brewery that produces less than 6 million barrels per year. This would effectively limit sales to craft beer. The big macro breweries, Coors, Miller, and Bud, make too much beer to fall into this category.
Shikes reports that Priola believes he has the support of the grocery stores, though they would like to sell all types of beer, but he is not sure yet about the craft brewers, and independent liquor stores. The bill would also limit those sales to beers that are less than 10 percent ABV (which is the majority of them). "That's an important part of the bill," Priola says, "because the beers above 10 percent start to get closer to spirits and wine. I don't want to get into what liquor stores do and do well, but I do want to have a convenient way for consumers to buy full-strength beer when they're getting chips and dips." Priola says he will probably introduce his bill in the last few days of January or in the first few days of February. We will follow this closely, and keep you informed.
