Just Say NO!
- November 17, 2014 -
Beer and Wine in Grocery Stores?

Just say no. If grocery store chains are allowed to sell “full-strength” beer and wine, it will change the marketplace for the worse. Independent liquor stores will have business siphoned away, and local craft beer and wine makers will have a much more difficult time finding retailers to sell their product. It won’t expand the market, it will shrink it.

Colorado’s thriving beer scene has prospered partly because state regulations allow small brewers, wineries and distillers to self-distribute their products directly to retailers. It's not like that in many other states. It’s how New Belgium, Odell, Bristol and just about every other craft producer in the state has been able to grow and sell great beer. It’s why you’ll find fabulous selections of craft beverages in local liquor stores who “get it”.

We’ll have a lot more to say about all this in the coming months, as the grocery-store-driven “choice” campaign heats up. Don’t be fooled: it’s not about choice, it’s about grocery stores making money by selling high-volume national beer and wine brands.

Ask yourself: if it’s such a crappy product, then why do Colorado’s grocers and convenience stores devote tens of thousands of linear feet of extremely valuable and expensive refrigerated display space to selling 3.2 beer?

Mystery of Count Chocula
- October 23, 2014 -
In case you missed the 9 News in Fort Collins we have the link to share with you. Black Bottle Brewery bought out two Albertsons stores of their famous seasonal Count Chocula cereal. For what reason you ask? To drown it in their beer! They used boxes of Count Chocula cereal to add some flavor to their craft beer that they will release at the end of October.

Even General Mills got excited once they caught wind of what was happening. General Mills even sent Sean Nook at Black Bottle Brewery some more boxes so that he can brew up a batch for the CEO and others of General Mills to try. Look for the beer that they will be brewing for St. Patrick's Day as well. They are going to use Lucky Charms for that one!

- October 14, 2014 -
Press Release

Roaring Fork Beer Company is pleased to present the works of local artists, Chris Erickson and Stanley Bell at the brewery’s tasting room in Carbondale, Colorado. Currently in house are small to large scale pieces of various mediums by both Erickson and Bell, also members of Studio for Works and Arts, or “SAW.” SAW is a collaborative studio and gallery space located at 525 Buggy Circle in Carbondale.

Please join them on Wednesday October 22nd, from 5-8p, for a casual artist reception and showing, and a chance to chat with both artists about their featured works. Light snacks will be provided and a special beer infusion will be tapped for the night.

Roaring Fork Beer Company’s boutique tasting room, located at 1941 Dolores Way, has quickly become a staple meeting and greeting destination for local artists, outdoor enthusiasts, local business owners and industry folks alike. RFBC Tasting Room Manager, Aly Sanguily, takes pride in supporting the artistic communities of the Roaring Fork Valley and makes showcasing their works a high priority for the tasting room space.

Sanguily, an out-of-practice artists herself states, “My vision for the tasting room even before we opened was to create an unpretentious environment for local artists to showcase their works, giving them a chance to use the brewery’s space as their own personal gallery with a showing and artist reception at each rotation. I wanted to allow the tasting room to have a larger purpose than just a “beer drinking” establishment. I wanted people to walk in and immediately have a conversation about the aesthetics and the artistic habitat that they have just stepped into.”

Have some fun at Bristol

Bristol Brewing Company, known for brewing distinctive, award-winning beers for the people of Colorado, announces the release of its Imperial IPA on Thursday, May 15. Bristol’s Imperial IPA is one of seven beers in the Brewhouse Series, and is Compass IPA’s stronger, hoppier cousin.

This citrusy, medium-bodied beer is amber in color, featuring four varieties of hops: Columbus, Simcoe, Amarillo, and Centennial. And while Bristol’s Imperial IPA is pungent and robust in flavor - checking in at an 8.1 percent ABV - it’s a treat for the hop loyal that has just a bit more finesse than the popular but typically palate-crushing American IPA. Beginning Thursday, May 15, following the release party, the beer will be available on tap and in 22 oz. bomber bottles in the Bristol Pub, as well as in restaurants, bars, and liquor stores along the Front Range.

WHEN:
Thursday, May 15 from 5:30 - 8 p.m.

Strange Craft Beer Company
- May 12, 2014 -
Straight from Denver Westword Blogs

The latest challenge for Tim Myers is a name change: Strange Brewing will complete its switch to Strange Craft Beer Company this month -- a change that came about as the result of a trademark battle with a similarly named homebrew shop in Massachusetts.

"We have to get everything changed over or destroyed," Myers explains. "We're done with all the old growlers and pint glasses. We got the new shirts and the new web site." The new sign for the front of the building will be installed later this month.

The two sides also agreed not to sell beer in each other's state for five years and not to use each other's beer names. Strange Brew's are mostly homebrew kits, so far.

In the meantime, Strange has continued to grow and expand, adding a patio and a larger space next door last year, winning a World Beer Cup medal for its Cherry Kriek in April, and bottling its second batch of Dr. Strangelove Barleywine-Style Ale.

"The fact that we won an award on a one-barrel system validates everything I have been doing for the last few years," says Witsoe. "This was our first foray into the big-boy world of beer medals. ...I can't even describe how it feels."
And the medal, for Jean Claude Van Blonde, a Belgian-style blonde, couldn't have come at a better time, since Wit's End will be replacing the one-barrel system in May with a seven-barrel brewhouse that will allow the brewery to significantly expand.

"We're ushering in a new chapter," Witsoe says. "But it feels nice to put closure on it."

The new system, along with four new seven-barrel fermenters, was manufactured by Bennett Forgeworks in Ridgway, and Witsoe, along with assistant brewer Pat McNerney and taproom manager Matt Boehm, are now working to get everything positioned and hooked up.

"We'll do our first batch and cross our fingers," he says.

Once Witsoe feels like he has been able to scale up his core recipes for the new system and is "confident that everything is doing what it is supposed to do," he plans to "open the floodgates and crank out as much beer as possible. That is the goal."

The upgrade will allow Wit's End to distribute kegs of beer to local bars and restaurants -- something Witsoe hasn't really been able to do for the past two and half years. If things go well, he will likely can or bottle limited amounts of his beer -- probably Jean Claude Van Blonde, for starters -- later this year.

Left Hand New Stout Glass
- April 24, 2014 -
Straight from Eric Gorski and the Denver Post

When drinking a stout you want to make sure you have the correct glass so that it will allow you to take in the aromas of what makes your favorite stout.

Specialized beer glasses appeal to connoisseurs, but the architects of the stout glass view the project more as a way to introduce neophytes or skeptics to the beer style. Matt Rutkowski, U.S. vice president for Spiegelau, said the idea is “to move the needle to get people aware of stout,” which some may avoid as being too dark or bitter.

For Left Hand, it also made sense to provide another showcase for Milk Stout and Nitro Milk Stout, its top-selling beers.

So on to the glass itself and what the breweries have to say about it … it is pure quartz, making it light, thin and clear (and fragile). The bottom is designed to drive beer and foam upward into the main bowl, which is wider and conical. The glass is large enough that you can pour a 12- or 16-ounce beer into it and still have plenty of room to savor the smell.

Left Hand co-founder Dick Doore said the glass allows drinkers to take in the aromas of roast, chocolate and lactose sugar that combine for that characteristic sweetness of Milk Stout and Milk Stout Nitro.

“You don’t have a choice,” Doore said. “It puts it right in your face.”

It’s also not so out there that it’s hard to hold or hoist.

Rutkowski said that greenish-blue tint on the thicker rim and base of an average pint glass comes from traces of iron. People think a thick glass will keep beer colder, he said, but it draws temperature into the class, warming the beer. The glass does not hold aroma and kills mouthfeel by going flat more quickly, he said.

“Saying glass is glass,” Rutkowski said, “is like saying all beer is alike.”

Boulder's Sanitas Brewing and Crown Beverages debut
- April 14, 2014 -
Straight from Denver Westword Blogs and Jonathan Shikes

Colorado has been the king of canned craft beers since Oskar Blues began packaging its brews in aluminum more than a decade ago. And although the Longmont beer maker continues to change the game, other breweries are getting in on the act as well.

This week, Boulder's Sanitas Brewing, which opened last September, debuted a limited-edition beer, 360º Tripel, in a two new cans from Crown Beverages. The first has a lid that pulls all the way off; the second has a puncture hole at the top to make the beer pour more smoothly. Sanitas is the first Colorado craft brewery to use the cans.

"They like to team up with a local brewery," says Sanitas's Zach Nichols of Crown. Sanitas had been planning to put a new beer in a can for a while; the brewery sells its cans out of the taproom and in about forty stores in Boulder County.

Crown had both cans on display at the Craft Brewers Conference, which took place in Denver this week for the first time. The annual trade show drew 8,000 brewing professionals to town. The company first revealed the pull-off lid -= called the 360 End =- a year ago during the CBC in Washington, D.C., with Pennsylvania's Sly Fox Brewing.

The pull-off cans are a little problematic in some states because they violate old trash ordinances that were established in the days of pop-top cans. Colorado passed a similar rule in the early 1980s that was related to recycling.

1933 Brewery Now Open
- March 27, 2014 -
1933 Brewery now open in Fort Collins

Nothing was going to stop the brewery owners, Jimmy Vanderweide and Cody Pisacka, from opening their dream. Even after their four fermenters were stolen from the building that is their brewery, they kept their goal in mind. They have finally opened their doors in March at 4025 S. Mason St., Unit C Fort Collins, CO.

The theme of the brewery comes from the end of Prohibition in 1933 and has an older but hip look to it. And its location give it the furthest far south brewery in Fort Collins.

Stop by during the week Monday-Friday Noon-9pm and try out their craft beers! Bring a friend and make an event out of it. If you are hungry they have various food trucks that will be parked out their front doors.

The weekend of March 29, they will have Carl Carrillo playing 80's and old country music. Give them a call for more information 970-377-4107

Wit's End Brewing system goes from 1 to 7
- March 25, 2014 -
Straight from Eric Gorski and the Denver Post

Wit’s End Brewing of Denver just landed financing that will allow it to grow from a one-barrel to a seven-barrel system.

Owner Scott Witsoe said the expansion will result in more beers, more active distribution and tap accounts, and expanding tap room hours from Wednesday through Sunday to seven days a week.

Witsoe said he obtained a small business loan to finance the project, a pleasant turn of events after his initial efforts to get bank financing to open went nowhere.

Witsoe is getting his new equipment from Bennett Forgeworks out of Ridgway, which is attracting attention for the brew kettles it is now producing alongside railings, fireplace doors and other products in the Ouray County town that is also home to the Colorado Boy Pub and Brewery and its famed brewing school.

TRVE Brewing Adding New Space

TRVE Brewing adding new space for wild and sour beers

Straight from Eric Gorski and the Denver Post

TRVE Brewing’s barrel-aging program has been getting well-deserved praise since its debut last year - and the small but ambitious Denver brewery soon will have room for a lot more oak.

TRVE Brewing will keep their taproom on Broadway and open another place in order to age their wild and sour beers. There is no plan a the moment to add a tasting room just yet. They just wanted more space.

“The plan is to keep this place moving exactly the way it is,” Nunns said. “It’ll be the focal point, the place you can come hang out and have a beer. But we’ll have more cool bottled stuff to serve you while you’re here.”

Trinity Looking to Expand
- March 10, 2014 -
Trinity Brewing planning to open another location in Denver area.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE from Eric Gorski and The Denver Post

Founder and head brewer Jason Yester confirmed Trinity is targeting 2016 for its ambitious Denver project, which he said would likely involve a 30-barrel brewing system in a roughly 8,000 square-foot space in a warehouse district.

Most new brewery start-ups in Denver have adopted the kitchen-free tap room model, and a brewpub of Trinity’s caliber would be welcome addition to the scene. In Colorado Springs, Trinity serves up slow food with an organic, local focus.

The plan is to use the Denver Trinity location for distribution of bottles in seven or eight cities out of state initially, Yester said. But Trinity is not waiting until then to begin distributing to its first out-of-state market. Yester, whose family lives in Oregon, said the brewery is scheduled to begin shipping its first bottles to Portland starting in mid-April.

Yester said he plans to move to Denver in two years and then nail down a location for the brewery, which would then take six to eight months to open. He said the River North neighborhood - bursting with new breweries - is one potential landing spot.

Tommyknocker Brewery Plans to Can
- March 03, 2014 -
After twelve years Tommyknocker is going to give canning another shot.

From the Denver Westword
The brewery, which was founded in 1994 as one of the state's craft pioneers, will enlist the help of Longmont's Mobile Canning to package a relatively new beer, IPA & A Half, in twelve-ounce cans beginning in May.
"We did in draft last year and it was so successful that we decided it would be our first offering in the new package," Indrehus explains. The name is a tongue-in-cheek reference to double IPAs and triple IPAs, which are popular now. Tommyknocker, on the other hand, prefers to make "easier drinking" beers, he notes: "We're not an over-the-top brewery."

Tommyknocker, which just finished a $2 million expansion and plans to brew 14,000 barrels of beer in 2014, will start by canning 4,000 cases of IPA & A Half, and 1,500 cases per month after that. If sales go well, Indrehus will give Tommyknocker's history a nod by canning Ornery Amber again -- although that beer is now simply called Vienna-Style Amber. "If we do," he adds, "we'll probably stop bottling that one."

That was one of the lessons that Tommyknocker learned the first time around. "We made a bunch of mistakes," Indrehus says. For one, the brewery cannibalized the bottled version of Ornery Amber by making the cans.

But Tommyknocker also lacked the space at the time to increase production beyond its one-head filler, a machine it later sold.

Yak and Yeti get new TAPS
- January 30, 2014 -
From the Press Release -

Yak & Yeti Brewpub has rebranded it's tap handles for 2014. The old handles were hand-made wooden "Y"-shaped handles to represent the double Y's in the Yak and Yeti, but due to the recent deluge of new breweries a rebranding was becoming more necessary. When the Yak & Yeti debuted their wooden wye there were only a few breweries in Colorado that had natural wood-based tap handles, less than two years later there are around two dozen breweries that are marketing a similar look.

The Yak & Yeti doesn't have a dedicated merchandise or branding manager so Adam Draeger (head brewer) takes on the responsibilities himself. "There are so many new breweries that are using beetle-kill wood or cnc routed/laser etched wood tap handles that I thought we should turn a different direction entirely," says Draeger.

The new handles are one-piece molded urethane-based with a glossy paint job. The yeti wears a sandwich signboard for labeling each individual beer. The Yak & Yeti partnered with Taphandles.com for the manufacture of the handles, the entire process took about three months with artist concepts, revisions, prototyping and production.

The handles can be seen at both the Yak & Yeti Restaurant (8665 N Sheridan Blvd, Westminster), the Brewpub (7803 Ralston Rd, Arvada) and select tap houses in and around Denver.

For those interested in purchasing one for your own collections the tap handles are retailing at the brewpub for $65 each (tax included).

Oskar Blues Brewery Now Filling Specialty Beer Crowlers at The Tasty Weasel Taproom
- January 10, 2014 -
Oskar Blues, best known for being the first Craft Brewery to can their beer, has a new can you will want to check out!

Hot off the News from the Tasty Weasel Taproom:

Longmont, CO & Brevard, NC " What IS a Crowler™?

A) A super big CAN B) A super big deuce C) A new type of growler D) All of the above

If you picked D, you’re damn right.

A Crowler™ (CAN + growler) is a 32-ounce CAN filled with fresh craft beer from the source. Yep, draft beer in a portable growler-sized CAN. It’s the newest innovation coming from the Oskar Blues Brewery taproom and their development partner Ball Corporation, the pioneers of the American craft beer-in-a-CAN movement.

“We get off on pushing the limits, doing things differently and the Crowler™ is another step of innovation to take advantage of what the can package has to offer from behind the bar. More beer options in more cans, we’re working on creating one big glasshole,” says Jeremy Rudolf, the man behind the Crowler™ integration at Oskar Blues.

Craft beer drinkers dig their growlers filled in local taprooms, but standard glass growlers are often brought into pubs and tap rooms without being cleaned correctly, which affects the taste and cleanliness of the refill. They also don’t seal well and allow light in, while the Crowler™ is more portable and takes advantage of what the can has to offer by eliminating light-struck or skunky beer.

The Crowler™ is a one-use, recyclable 32-oz can that is filled and seamed right at the bar in the Tasty Weasel Tap Room in ColoRADo, using an All-American Can Company seamer. This is a tabletop design commonly used for canning homemade food into steel cans and allows you to take home one-off and specialty beers. The filler was modified to work with aluminum, and the height adjusted to accommodate the CROWLER™ height. Just like its smaller 12-oz. counterpart, the Crowler™ is made from aluminum that has 68% recycled content and also is infinitely recyclable.

Here’s how a CROWLER™ works: Oskar Blues added a CO2 purge station to purge the cans before filling them, which helps assure that there is no beer-degrading oxygen added to the beer. The CROWLER™ is purged and immediately filled. Then the lid is applied and the CROWLER™ is placed onto the seamer pedestal. The pedestal is turned so that the can is raised up and locked under pressure into the seamer. Turn it on, and push GO. Turn it off, twist the pedestal to lower the can, and take it with you to enjoy. Once you open the CROWLER™, drink it up"ensuring the craft beer is consumed in a single serving while the beer is in its prime, just like in the taproom.
